Summary
Late-deafened (hard of hearing) in early adulthood. Starred in Broadway shows and movies, winning several awards; made her last film in 1950, after which increasing deafness led to increasing depression for 10 years. She died of an overdose of bariturates, ruled as a suicide. Her daughter Brooke Hayward wrote Haywire (1977), a memoir of her family and the tragic events leading to her mother's death.
