Summary
Born deaf in Beickleigh, Devonshire, England; emigrated with his family to Canada in 1857; Ontario Institution for the deaf 1871-1874, then became dormitory supervisor there 1874-1878 and teacher of drawing 1876-1878. Left to become a professional painter, studying art in Toronto, then in 1883 opened the first of several studios. Specialized in life-sized portraits in crayon and oil paint as well as in portrait photography. Married Fannie Elizabeth Lewis in 1884. Active in deaf organizations.
