Born at Chester, IL; lost hearing in early childhood from scarlet fever. Attended the Illinois School for the deaf, then became a printer's apprentice, then a printer in Cairo, IL in 1873. To other printing jobs in St. Louis, then Cairo again, where he worked his way up to foreman of a newspaper press room.
