Born at Maysville, KY, Indiana School for the deaf ages 12-17, then the Illinois School for the deaf for 2 years, graduating 1858. Appointed a teacher at the Illinois School, then moved to teach at the Mississippi School for the deaf for a year. Recruited to teach at the Louisiana School for the deaf, where he remained for over 30 years. Married Elvira Clark about 1865.
