Summary
Born in New York, but spent most of his life in Iowa. Deafened by illness in childhood; entered the Iowa School for the Deaf in 1869, but left in 1876 before graduation due to a limit of 7 years at that school. Learned shoemaking in the Iowa School and pursued that trade in his adult life, becoming instructor of shoemaking at the Iowa School from 1889 on. Co-founder of the Iowa Association for the Advancement of the Deaf, 1880.
