Summary
Born at Catskill, NY; deafness attributed to the booming of guns celebrating the inauguration of President Abraham Lincoln on the same day Thomas was born. Attended the New York Institution for the Deaf, graduating 1884. Preparatory studies for entering Gallaudet College had to be abandoned due to poor health. During vacation periods 1877-1881, employed as a clerk in the Catskill post office. Rejected for a permanent job in the New York City post office because he was deaf; became a clerk in a clothing firm, rising to head shipping clerk and later became a regular salesman working with deaf customers. Married Jennie Williams.
