Had hearing problems , diagnosed about age 8, and a resulting speech impediment during childhood; reportedly attended the Rhode Island School for the Deaf for a short time. Graduated Dartmouth College 1976; honorary doctorate from Dartmouth in 1990. Linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals 1976-1989. After retiring from pro football in 1989, first was general manager of the New York team in the short-lived World League of American Football, then became a vice-president for Disney Sports Attractions. Was appointed to and served on the Cincinnati City Council 1988-1990.
