Summary
Born at Ilkeston in Derbyshire. Deaf at age 5 due to brain concussion from a fall on his chin. Educated at the London Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, then to a temporary deaf school at Ramsgate. Apprenticed to a tailor, opening his own shop in 1890; in 1899, gave up his business to become full-time missioner to the deaf of Plymouth. Married Margaret Emily James, deaf, in 1899. Fractured his skull in a 1928 motorcycle accident, but recovered. Retired in 1933, dying at Plymouth.
