Born at Churchill, MB as Shelley Marie Black; deafened at 18 months from meningitis. Ontario School for the Deaf 1954-1960, Saskatchewan School for the Deaf 1960-1964, Montana School for the Deaf 1964-1967, finally graduating Alberta School for the Deaf 1967-1971. Worked for over 13 years as a postal mechanic for Canada Post. 1973 Miss Deaf Calgary and 1974 runner-up for Miss Deaf Canada. Married Douglas R. Bernhardt, also deaf.
