Summary
First deaf Canadian to earn a Ph.D. (from the University of Toronto, 1951). Born at Nordegg, Alberta; deaf at 9 months from pneumonia. Wright Oral School, NYC 1927-1932, P.S. 47 in NYC 1932-1933, and oral classes for the deaf at Clinton Street Public School, Toronto 1933-1936. Corresondence courses for 9th grade, 10th grade at Mackenzie Island continuation school, then another continuation school at Red Lake, finally graduated 13th grade at Kenora High School 1940-1941. Entered the University of Toronto in 1941 (B.S., 1945 and M.S., 1946, in addition to the Ph.D. in 1951). Was a member of the 1953 Col. Patrick D. Baird Arctic Expedition. Geochemist for various companies and agencies 1955-1961. Taught mathematics, then physics at Gallaudet College, 1961 until his death from a heart attack.
