Born deaf to deaf parents and with two deaf sisters in New Jersey. Enrolled in the New Jersey School for the Deaf 1944-graduation 1958; graduate of Gallaudet College, then took a master's degree in education. In 2005, was working on a second master's degree in Teaching ASL. Professor at Suffolk Community College in New York, at first teaching deaf students but later shifting to teaching hearing students. National Association of the Deaf president 1984-1986.
