Deaf at 2 from diphtheria; attended a private oral school for the deaf in Northampton for 8 years and the Brondesbury School, London, for 2 more years, then took a 4-year building course and apprenticed for another year. Emigrated to Canada in 1906, finally settling in Toronto and starting his own construction business in 1910 or 1911. Married Ann Mary Patton.
