BS degree from Eastern Illinois University and MA from Loyola University, Chicago. Social worker 1976-1978, family services children's program director 1978-1979, and coordinator of health education for disabled persons in Chicago Dept. of Health 1983-1985. 1988-1990, worked for the state attorney general's office as deputy chief of the disabled persons advocacy division.. Executive director of the National Center for Access Unlimited, 1990-1992. Joined the ABC 7 television station in Chicago in 1991 as a feature reporter specializing in issues pertaining to people with disabilities. Her segments appeared regularly on ABC 7's Sunday morning and Thursday morning news broadcasts. Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1994 as vice chairperson of the President's Committee on Employment for People with Disabilities. Since 1992, was president of Karen L. Meyer and Associates, a consulting firm dealing with issues relating to disabled persons. Also directed DePaul University's Office of Students with Disabilities and taught at DePaul from 1993 onward.
