Summary
Born in Minneapolis, MN, the son of U.S. Senator W.D. Washburn; graduated Gallaudet College in 1890; studied architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, art at the Art Students League in New York, and in Europe under Albert Bresnard. Was also a war correspondent for the Chicago Daily News; died at South Livermore, Maine. Was also an entomologist, and published several scientific papers in that field. Honorary Doctorate of Science from Gallaudet College, 1924, and honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Bowdoin College, 1947. Gallaudet University's Washburn Arts Building is named for him.
