Summary
Born deaf to deaf parents; attended the St. Kilda School for the Deaf, Melbourne. Brother Eric was also born deaf and also attended St. Kilda's. After completing school, worked in a tailor shop, then during World War II as a process worker in a factory. Moved to Sydney after marriage to Jack Shaw (also deaf) in 1943, becoming a typical housewife and mother of those times. Became an activist in late life when she became involved in the deaf-community-based movement to reform Australian deaf education from oral to total communication philosophies. Participated in the production of a deaf literary journal called Sound Off.
