Summary
Born in New York City; deaf at 8 from typhus fever. Returned to public shool briefly, but soon transferred to what is now the Lexington School for the Deaf for a year and a half. Left to go to a private German and English school, then left that school at age 13, attending an art school for 3 years. Apprenticed to a wood engraver for 3 more years, then worked for several publishing houses.
