Hard of hearing since infancy; went to regular public schools and then the University of Tennessee. While in UT, played on the Lady Vols basketball team, being named best college freshman player in 1998 and being considered one of the best in the nation. In 2003, she was playing professionally for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA.
