Summary
Born at Southwark and deafened at about age 3. Attended the London Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb ages 10-14, apprenticed to a woodcarver, then became an independent woodcarver for about 17 years before concern about deaf people's frequent poverty, drunkeness, loneliness and other problems led him to enter lay missionary service to the deaf. Established several congregations and social services for deaf people. Died after suffering liver cancer for 2 years.
