Summary
Severely hard of hearing from childhood. Born in Baggotstown, Bruff, County Limerick; graduated 7th from Kings's College, Cambridge, 1876. Taught at Eton; in 1888, went to Romania and Bulgaria for the London Times, and formally joined their staff in 1892. Was a recognized authority on Balkan areas and often acted in a political/diplomatic position; died in Sofia, Bulgaria, and was buried in the Rilo monastery there. Author of the article "Albania" in the classic 1910 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
