Summary
Born in Concord, NH. Father died when she was 4, leaving the family in difficult circumstances for many years. Deafened at age 12 by an epidemic of scarlet fever. Briefly attended the Horace Mann School, but had to withdraw due to poverty. Largely self-taught in literature and writing; wrote for Boston newspapers; had poems printed in The Youth's Companion and the Chautauqua journals. Married Charles Cutler Fisher, a deaf woodcarver. Since she was not paid for much of her writing, she also did paintings for the additional income.
