Summary
Born in New York City, deafened in infancy from "congestion of the brain". Entered the Institution for the Improved Instruction of Deaf-Mutes (Lexington School), graduating at age 16. An initial interest and aptitude for chemistry was transferred to photography, where he learned on the job in various photographic printing labs. He bought one going lab business and expanded it, introducing some photographic innovations, until he sold the firm 4 years later, staying there as an employee of the purchaser. Journalist for several deaf newspapers, and a founding member of the Union League of Deaf-Mutes.
