Deaf at age 2 from spinal meningitis; raised and attended public schools using cued speech. Received a cochlear implant at age 6, which was of very little help, but later received improved models of implants, though he still could not understand speech with the implant alone. Graduated high school in Wilmington, NC in 1999. Entered Campbell University in NC.
