Summary
Born deaf from maternal rubella at Phoenix, AZ, though deafness was not identified until age 2. Attended and graduated the Arizona School for the Deaf, going to work as a professional automobile mechanic, then entered Gallaudet College in 1957, graduating 1962. Worked for the AZ Highway Patrol as an auditor for 2 years, then became a counselor and teacher at the Arizona School. Quit after 4 years for better pay as a printer, rising to assistant superintendent at a printing company; while there, earned a private pilot's license in 1965 and bought his own airplane, keeping it 14 years. Switched to working for a newspaper press room for 8 years until his father died and he became manager of his father's estate.
