Summary
Born at Montgomery, AL and deafened at age 4 by severe illness. Went to the Deaf-Mute Institute at Talladega, AL, 1873-1880, then opened a shoemaking shop in Montgomery. Illness forced him to switch to the upholstering, awning and tent business from 1893 on.
