Summary
Born at Cherry Valley, NY; deaf from scarlet fever in infancy. Entered the New York Institution for the Deaf in 1850, graduating 1864. 2 years in the National Academy of Design in New York City, then opened a studio for 14 years in Cherry Valley doing paintings, specializing in landscapes and animals. Appointed a teacher in the Central New York Institution in 1880; after 15 years working with the primary classes, was made head of the department of drawing and wood engraving. First wife was Mary A. Getman; after her death, remarried to Isadore Short.
