Summary
Born at West Plains, MO; deafened at age 8 by spinal meningitis. Entered the Missouri School for the Deaf in 1946 and graduated 1954; B.A. (1959) and honorary doctorate (1988) from Gallaudet University. Teacher and coach at Nebraska School for the Deaf, 1959-1968; executive secretary of Gallaudet College Alumni Association, 1968-1989, and director of various Gallaudet alumni offices, 1968-1989; Special Assistant to the [Gallaudet] President, 1989 until retirement in 1996. Author of Deaf Heritage, a Narrative History of Deaf America (1981) and The Week the World Heard Gallaudet (1989). With his wife Rosalyn Gannon (q.v.), retired to a berry and tree farm near Frederick, MD.
