Hearing. Came to America as an indentured servant, and set up a private school on the estate of Colonel Daingerfield, near Fredericksburg, VA. In 1774, he received a deaf pupil, John Edge (q.v.), and successfully taught writing and simple addition before the boy's father got behind in his payments to Harrower, cutting short this experiment in education. Harrower is the first known teacher of the deaf in America.
