Born at Council Bluffs, IA to deaf parents Efford and Emma (Page) Johnson. B.A. (1964), University of Denver; master's (1972) and doctorate (1974) from the University of Iowa. Superintendent at the Illinois School for the Deaf, 1976-1987, then first deaf superintendent of the Iowa School for the Deaf, 1987-retirement in 2003. Came out of retirement to become superintendent at St. Mary's School for the Deaf in Buffalo, NY.
