Summary
Born at Canton, China; family moved to Hong Kong; began losing his hearing when 10 years old. Attended hearing elementary school in Hong Kong; apprenticed first as a tailor and then as a carpenter for 5 years before learning about Gallaudet College and coming to America. B.S. in physics (1971) from Gallaudet; master's in mathematics (1974) from George Washington University; Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Montana. Mathematics teacher at Gallaudet University, 1981- . First deaf person from China, and the third from Asia, to earn a doctoral degree.
