Summary
Born and grew up in England; deafened as an infant by an ototoxic drug used as a treatment for meningitis. Attended local public schools, but was bullied from ages 11-18 because of his deafness. Eventually went to college, earning a Ph.D. degree in toxicology. Limited research opportunities and non-acceptance of his deafness led him to come to the U.S., where he went to work for the Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX, doing research on ototoxic drugs.
