Summary
"Colonel" was his given name, not a rank or title. Attended the American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb for 6 years. A group of Ohio citizens noted a need for educating the young deaf children there, and started a small privately-supported school for the deaf at Tallmadge, OH in 1827, with Smith as its sole teacher. It lasted for 2 years until the opening of the Ohio Institution for the Deaf and Dumb in Columbus, and most of Smith's students transferred there.
