Summary
Born in Lincoln, England; progressive deafness began during her college years. Attended Girton College for women, where her prowess in mathematics won notice from nearby Cambridge University. Earned bachelor's through doctoral degrees (the latter in 1885) from the University of London. She came to America to teach at Bryn Mawr College, PA. Shortly past 1900, she was completely deaf but continued to teach at Bryn Mawr, participating in professional mathematics societies and conferences. Was an editor and writer for various mathematics journals. Helped organize the American Mathematical Society and served 7 years on its council and 2 years as vice-president. Retired in 1925 and returned to Cambridge, England, where she died and was buried in St. Giles churchyard, Cambridge..
