Summary
Born deaf, probably from maternal rubella, into a family of Chinese heritage; Chinese name was Way Lin Choie. Attended deaf units in Dunedin public schools from kindergarten through age 13, then mainstreamed til age 17. Worked for the family merchandising business until it failed in 1989. Entered Otago University 1983, graduating and eventually become the first deaf New Zealander with an MBA degree (1998, Auckland University). Skiied for New Zealand in the 1991 World Games for the Deaf. Became president of the Deaf Association of New Zealand, 1993. As of 2000, was an accountant in the reestablished family business.
