Born deaf into a deaf family at Birmingham, AL; attended the Alabama School for the Deaf and graduated the Maryland School for the Deaf. B.A. from Gallaudet College, 1975, and M.A. from Western Maryland College, 1976. Taught a class for adult deaf persons at Alberta College in Edmonton plus evening drama classes; in 1981, became a teacher at the Alberta School for the Deaf, teaching ASL and deaf studies at all levels. Also taught ASL workshops elsewhere in Canada and worked as a compilor and editor for The Canadian Dictionary of ASL.
