Summary
Hereditarily deaf at birth in Iowa; both parents were also deaf. He initially went to regular schools, then to the Central Institute for the Deaf for 10 years. Graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, going into electrical engineering for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation. Earned an M.S. from St. Louis University, later a Ph.D. in curriculum and teaching from the University of Rochester. Eventually became associate dean of the educational support service program at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and occasionally also taught a course. In 2003, became Vice President at the Rochester Institute of Technology/Dean of NTID. President of the National Association of the Deaf 1982-1984 and served on the boards of other deaf and disabilities organizations.
