Summary
Deafened at age 13, supposedly from striking his head during a game of leap-frog, leading to a case of meningitis. Went to the Illinois School for the deaf, then to Gallaudet College, graduating 1890. Instrumental in the founding and operation of the weekly newspaper for the deaf The national exponent, which lasted 1894-1896.
