Possibly the first American-born deaf teacher (the other contender for the honor being Levi S. Backus [q.v.]). One of the first 7 pupils at the American School for the Deaf, at age 31; graduated at age 35. Taught in the Pennsylvania School for the deaf 1821-1824, leaving for health reasons.
