Summary
Born at Dresden, Saxony; illness at age 8 or 9 left him deaf. Graduated the Holy Cross Gymnasium (high school) in Dresden in 1851, where he picked up his partisan leanings towards German unification. Studied at various German universities, where he became more open in his political beliefs and agitation. He entered teaching in the field of political science at Leipzig, but left in 1862 for Freiburg after having stirred up political agitations in Leipzig. After Germany unified as a nation-state in 1870, Treitschke was elected to the Reichstag (parliament), taught at the University of Berlin, and turned out the 5-volume History of Germany in the Nineteenth Century (1879-1894). Became State Historian of Prussia in 1886. Died in Berlin. A statue to his memory was erected in Berlin before World War I.
