Summary
Hearing. Founder of the first school for the deaf in Sweden (1809, at Stockholm). He had taken on his first deaf pupil the year before, after previously teaching a blind woman. Removed by the Swedish queen and patroness of the school, Hedvig Elisabeth Charlotta (q.v.), after a disagreement on the school's management. He was later invited to Portugal to open a school for the deaf at Luz, near Lisbon; he remained in Portugal until 1828.
