Summary
Born deaf in Menasha, WI; attended the Wisconsin School for the deaf but graduated the Illinois School for the deaf in 1871; attended Gallaudet College briefly but left to work for a newspaper as a printer. Tried farming briefly, then became a bookkeeper. Eventually his father, Curtis, postmaster of Menasha, WI, appointed Charles as assistant postmaster; in 1895, Charles was postmaster, his father having retired. However, in 1903, he was again assistant postmaster. Brother, also deaf, was Harry Reed (q.v.).
