Native American (Inuit/Eskimo)
Born in a wild area of what is now the province of Nunavut; deaf at 5 months of age. Educated orally in the local public school system, then settled in Pangnirtanq. Worked at a weaving shop from 1974 onward. Growing up, she used a "home sign" system that may actually have been part of a distinct Inuit Sign Language, but in later life learned American Sign Language and taught ASL to deaf children in her village.
