Born and died at Parma, Italy. Either born deaf or became deaf in infancy. First name sometimes recorded in the form of Alexander. Eldest son of Ranuccio Farnese I, ruler of Parma and other parts of Renaissance Italy plus regent of the Netherlands. Because of his deafness, Alessandro was passed over and succession went instead to his hearing brother Odoardo.
