Summary
Deaf at age 3 from fever. After basic education in 3 different hearing schools and the High School for Oral Deaf Boys at Northampton, attended the Technical School and the Art School, both in Sheffield. Was attracted to astronomy beginning about age 9, and was a deeply active amateur astronomer. Also was a member of the Microscopial Society and gave papers on the biology of starch and on the physiology of blood. Moved to Birmingham and became a "dental mechanic", eventually qualifying as a dentist in 1923 and practicing that profession until retirement in 1938.
