Summary
First deaf lawyer on record. Probably born deaf, in London; at age 5, entered the London Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb as a private pupil 1810-1822; studied law and in 1829 was made a Barrister of the Middle Temple, specializing in conveyancing. Was fluent in 10 spoken/written languages and conversant in over 7 others; active in Edinburgh deaf activities. Retired in 1871 due to ill health. Died from pulmonary infection at North Brixton.
