Summary
Born deaf in Boston; family moved to Staunton, VA; student in Boston hearing schools and then at the American School for the deaf. Helped to establish (1839) and then taught at the Virginia School for the deaf; licensed to preach at age 57; ordained a deacon (1880) and a priest (1891); traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Europe; buried in Staunton.
