Summary
Did not attend a school for the deaf. Art studies at the Cooper Union, NY, the National Academy of Design, and the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. Was a successful wood engraver for years before that printing process was obsoleted; also accomplished in painting and crayons. Learned sign language only after marrying a deaf woman.
