Summary
Deaf at 2 from scarlet fever. Family emigrated to Iowa in 1856. Entered the Iowa School for the Deaf at its original location at Iowa City, near the end of the Civil War. Tried working as a newspaper printer for a year, but quit to pursue farming on a spread near Miles, IA. Twice elected as a director of the independent school district. Married Minnie Bausch (1855-1887?) in 1877; she died after 10 years of marriage, and Herbert remarried to a hearing woman.
