Summary
Born deaf in Washington state; attended hearing and oral schools but never learned to speak, then went to the Washington State School for the Deaf, graduating there and then graduating Gallaudet College in 1960. Worked at the Boeing Company for 9 years until he went to the Leadership Training Program for the Deaf, after which he took a new job as a counselor, student advisor, and an instructor at Seattle Central Community College. When his wife went off to college for her master's degree, he was forced to cook for himself, and learned about and got hooked on wine tasting and collecting. He dug out a wine cellar underneath his home by hand.
