Summary
Born in Bureau Co., IL; deaf at age 8; graduated the Illinois State Institution for the Deaf. Plans to enter Gallaudet College were frustrated by financial problems, and he spent the next 9 years supporting his mother and 3 sisters as a printer and a railroad car painter. Appointed foreman of the printing shop at the Nebraska School for the deaf 1890-1897; taught briefly at the Montana School for the deaf, then at the Oregon School for the deaf. He returned to teaching at the Nebraska School from 1901 onward. Married Eva S. Owen.
