Summary
Born in New York City; deafened by meningitis at age 7; attended NYC's P.S. 47; transferred to Townshend Harris prep school, from which he graduated. Graduated City College of New York, 1949; master's from American University. Taught at Gallaudet College, then New York University, then part-time at Adelphi and Hofstra Universities. Wrote American Sign Language, a Comprehensive Dictionary (1981), which has had several offshoot book and CD-ROM versions.
